The History of BSD - Part 1 (1974 - 1989)
PDP & VAX. Pascal & vi. DARPA & Google's Erich Schmidt. The story of BSD is all over the place.
BSD — and BSD-based operating systems — are a staple of computing. From the commercial BSD systems of the ‘80s and ‘90s, to the likes of FreeBSD and OpenBSD powering significant parts of modern Internet infrastructure.
But how did BSD get started? And, perhaps even more importantly, why was it created?
And, while we’re on the topic… What hardware was used? Who made it happen? And why on earth is Google’s ex-CEO, Eric Schmidt involved!?
This is Part 1 of the story of BSD. Perhaps one of the most important stories in all of modern computing.
