The "Burn-My-Windows" extension for GNOME is *glorious*
Shattering glass. Star Trek transporter. The "Thanos" Snap. Bring back the glory days of Compiz style effects to your Linux desktop... and then some.
Want to help keep The Lunduke Journal 100% independent and get some cool goodies in the process? It’s a sweet deal using that button. (Or you can become a Mega Elite Founding Member. Which is also pretty rad.)
Watch this video and tell me you don’t won’t be rushing to install the “Burn-My-Windows” GNOME extension:
Heck. I don’t even use modern GNOME (I’ve been spending more time living in XFCE lately), but these effects make me want to get GNOME back on my laptop!
I’m not gonna lie… I miss the days of 3D desktop effects. Compiz, Beryl, AIGLX… all of it. 3D spinning cubes for virtual desktops. Windows that catch on fire when you close them.
I would posit that these sorts of visual effects are far from pointless. They helped to make our computers just a little more fun. And a little more personal. I love it.
You can check out the code, contribute your own effects, or file bugs over at the “Burn-My-Windows” GitHub page, and grab it from the GNOME extensions page.
More. We need more of this sort of thing. Because it is awesome.
Oh, and I would be remiss if I did not mention that the same intrepid developer that brought this extension to life also created a GNOME extension to bring back the 3D Desktop Cube.
And it is just as fun as awesome as you remember it:
Huge high five to Simon Schneegans for making all of this happen. You are the man.
“Subscribing to The Lunduke Journal was the best thing I’ve ever done. It is what made me the man I am today.” - Somebody (probably)
Even if it’s not the best thing you’ve ever done… you get some cool books! Like this one:
