Our “Live in DOS for a Week” challenge has come to and end here at The Lunduke Journal. It was a blast to have a good excuse to play around with DOS stuff for a full week.

Gaming, software, programming, graphics, networking, different DOS systems… we kinda hit on all of it during the week! Well done, everyone!

What follows is a day-by-day breakdown of what happened during DOS Week (not including the various chats and hangouts):

Day 1

  • We kicked off “DOS Week” with a podcast.

  • Greg posted a handy Linux shell script for creating floppy images (for use in VMs for DOS).

  • Playing Star Trek 25th Anniversary, the DOS version, on an iPhone.

  • OpenGEM on FreeDOS!

  • Web browsing with Lynx!

  • Perl in FreeDOS!

  • OPL3 Sound output via code!

  • At 10am we held a Founding Member Hangout video chat where we talked, among other things, about a bunch of DOS stuff.

  • DOS memories from Lee… who does not want to run DOS! ;)

  • Remembering the Stoned.Monkey virus.

  • Scott’s plans… involving Lotus 1-2-3 and Cosmo’s Cosmic Adventure.

  • EDITV - A solid (free) text editor.

  • Microsoft Word 5.5 for DOS is freeware!

  • Cutting pins on a VGA cable for a Tandy 2500 SX/33.

  • This afternoon we had a text chat over on Lunduke.Locals.com where many tips and software recommendations were swapped.

  • Thinking about long lost floppies and Zip disks.

  • Calendar Creator Plus, Easy Way Desktop Publisher, & MS QBasic editor! Oh, my!

  • Getting DOS running on bare metal (an old Pentium).

  • Remembering Novell Netware. *shudder*

Day 2

  • Getting GW-BASIC working!

  • The challenges of networking in FreeDOS on a Thinkpad.

  • DOS for Dummies!

  • Getting an old Celeron loaded with FreeDOS.

  • So many bad sectors on that floppy!

  • mTCP_Telnet for DOS is fancy!

  • Jill of the Jungle!

  • Install Word? Check!

  • Descent is such a good game!

  • A reminder that GW-BASIC is open source.

  • The Tandy 1000TL has a working floppy drive now!

  • Mavis Beacon. She teaches typing.

  • Wordstar is the king of word processors.

  • MS-DOS ASMR? Ok!

  • Wolfenstein 3D running on the MNT Reform.

  • Android + DOSBox + Commander Keen.

  • Tinkering with SQLite in FreeDOS.

Day 3

  • Wordperfect 5.1 (the king!) in DOSBox-X

  • FreeDOS online on bare metal!

  • Tandy 1000TL surgery successful!

  • DOS, OpenBSD, and Wii. Oh, my!

  • Online and web browsing with DOS!

  • Big infographic of DOS games!

  • The day… coded in BASIC

  • FreeDOS Ethernet settings and details

  • MS-DOS Lan Manager

  • Pathminder!

  • One snazzy looking Tandy!

  • DOS gaming on a Linux palmtop

  • On BIOS and GW-BASIC

  • Moving files in and out of DOS with ETHERDFS.

  • More OPL3 sequencing on DOS!

  • DOS fire demos!

  • Mechwarrior 2 was such a great game.

Day 7

  • Top 5 DOS Games

  • The IBMulator!

  • Need More DOS!

  • “Search Engines” in ye old DOS-y times.

  • DOOM floppies!

  • Printing on old printers in DOS!

  • Spreadsheets in DOS on a Libretto

  • Presentation slides… in DOS!

  • Ok. Now that’s just fancy.

  • TED - DOS text editor

  • Getting sick on DOS week is no fun!
