I just run my own Pleroma server and use that to follow any threads that I might want to read. As far as only seeing part of the conversation goes, that's a lot like Twitter with its algorithmic threading, it only shows you replies it thinks you want to see.

I just wrote some things on Brax Me and my thought carried me to The Lunduke Journal so suddenly I realised I can propose one for the other.

To anyone who has experienced the rough UI and clunky UX of BraxMe this might sound like a terrible idea, but when you think about it - that's actually a feature! Haters will only hang around where they can enjoy themselves ;P

Actual features: manifold-private and pseudonymous, libre base, like-minded community.

Downsides: PHP run on AWS; Livestreaming, broadcasting and e-commerce are reserved to the enterprise version.

It's actually Rob Braxman that urged me to listen to Bryan Lunduke about 2 years ago. I can see how the two can get along to work together if needed.

TBH, I've stopped using social media. Did used to be on twitter and mastodon, but deleted my accounts. Hmmm, I suppose my comment on here counts as social media, lol :)

Well, mastodon has clients for DOS, Classic Mac, and whatnot… so I think it’s better than most alternatives.

Locals has always rubbed me the wrong way. I like the idea of a Mastodon server a bit more because I could run my own, but even then it seems a bit offputting to me.

I'd like something more akin to RSS, with everyone running their own server, and people using a local app, rather than an online service, to fetch, display, and interact with posts and comments. Though I suppose the reality of that situation is akin to what you'd get if everyone ran their own Mastodon server.

I don't like this drive to create on-line fiefdoms. Instead of one massive corporate tyrant you have a patchwork of petty tyrants working in concert to achieve the same ends.
