Next thing we know, Copilot usage will result in codebases that are a complete mess and GitHub will come out with some software that analyses others' well-structured code and refactors your code to look like theirs. Then people won't be able to comprehend their own codebases anymore and GitHub will come out with an AI that documents code for you. Mark my words :P

As for ChatGPT and the kind, the situation is good food for thought as whenever an AI can 100% accurately pretend to be a human, it means such human thoughts, ideas and behaviors have become 100% mechanical mimickry. Human writing is supposed to always enrich the minds of others, to provide insight that is unattainable by the crude cybernetics of artificial intelligence.

Ethics aside, garbage in, garbage out, springs to mind. Ultimately, this AI excuse for plagiarisim is a very bad idea.

I agree that the government should intervene and shut this stuff down. Work should need to be submitted to AI training sets by rights holders, not taken from the internet. The illegality of what is going on is clear as day.

Besides, programmers are already awful enough at their jobs. Do we really need to be less knowledgeable still?
