The beauty of computer games on Amber screens
Colors? Colors?! We don't need no stinking colors!
Colors are great. When it comes to computer displays, I have a particular soft spot for the look of EGA 16 color and VGA 256 color displays.
But, sometimes, less is more.
Case in point: Amber screens.
Seriously. No colors. Other than Amber. Various shades of Amber. It can, at least in some cases, be truly beautiful.
To celebrate the joy of Amber computer gaming, @TheMedievalNerd over on the tweeters is posting a series of Amber game screenshots this month. Some of them are downright gorgeous.
What follows are some of my favorites. Ones that truly make the game and the Amber displays shine.
Gorgeous, right? Sometimes even the VGA games look amazing in Amber. Just adds something to the atmosphere.
But not every game works well in Amber. Some just plain look… wrong. Others are almost unplayable.
Here's a few examples where Amber is… less than good.
To be fair, the biggest culprit of games looking bad in Amber are CGA Mono color games. Which… yeah. ;)
And, just because, here is DOOM. Played in Amber.
