Maybe I'm too hard on modern smartphones...
As I (a critic of modern computers) lay here, sick in bed, I'm sure happy I have my Android and iOS gadgets...
I’ve been a pretty loud critic of modern computing tech.
Software bloat. Online activation and DRM. Non-removable batteries and lack of other user serviceable parts. Surveillance and privacy issues.
Let’s be honest, the sea of problems with modern computers is vast and stormy.
Yet…
As I lay here, sick in bed, writing an article on my iPhone — yes, I have an iPhone XR as well as a Unihertz Titan Android phone — I am struck by how happy I am to have my modern portable computers at moments like this.
Right now, I’m writing this article.
Sure, it’s not on a full sized, physical keyboard… but it works.
Earlier… I was watching a movie. Before that I played a little Civilization in a DOS emulator.
Every so often I hop into the Lunduke.Locals.com community for a little nerdy chit chat and to see what folks are talking about.
It's… kind of amazing.
For a guy with a house full of kids — and times like this week when I’m sick — it’s a godsend.
Is it perfect? Noooooo.
I have a lot of complaints. (See above for just the Tip O The Iceberg.) And there are lots and lots of ways that older computing gear is vastly superior.
Yet…
I certainly don’t mind having these smartphones, as flawed as they are, to keep me entertained, keep me working (sort of), and keep me connected at times when sitting at my desk just isn't an option.
So maybe… just maybe… I've been too hard on modern smartphones.
Maybe.
