Introducing "Nerd Cards" - Retro computing, digital trading cards
Like baseball cards. For computer nerds.
Remember collecting and trading baseball cards as a kid? Putting your favorite cards into a binder to display and sort. Trading with friends. Lusting after a specific rookie card down at the card shop.
Wouldn’t it be fun to have that… only with classic, retro computers instead of baseball players? And with cards able to be bought and sold with anyone around the world?
The answer is yes. Yes, it would.
Well, dare I say, Ta-da!
Nerd Cards are NFTs. Unique, digital, collectable cards that can be purchased and re-sold as often as you like.
Each card features one specific, classic computer (or computer peripheral) — along with a few stats and features specific to that computer — and an artistic, stylized rendering of the classic system.
The initial pricing of each card is set low enough that anyone can get started collecting classic computer trading cards.
How to collect Nerd Cards:
Head to the Nerd Cards collection on OpenSea.
Create an account, and set up your wallet, if you don’t already have one. (It’s surprisingly easy).
Buy the cards for the retro computers that you need in your collection!
Share your collection with the world! Show your friends. Share them on social media. Put them on your webpage. Gaze longingly at them! Follow your heart!
Will you collect the machines you had (or wanted) as a kid? Only Apple or Commodore machines? Just portables? Or are you a completist?
More cards — featuring unique, retro computers — are added at regular intervals! So click the “favorite” button on the Nerd Cards collection and keep tabs for when new ones are released.
F.A.Q.
Q: Why did you create Nerd Cards?
A: Because it’s fun! I firmly believe that computing should be fun. And I loved collecting trading cards as a kid. Combine that with my love of computers (which, I’m guessing you share) and Nerd Cards simply was too obvious and wonderful not to do!
Q: NFTs? Yuck! I heard that NFTs are super duper yicky!
A: Don’t believe everything you’ve heard on the Internet! NFTs are a super fun way of buying, collecting, and selling digital artwork. Which… is what trading cards are!
Q: Won’t there be a lot of fees when buying and selling these cards? I heard NFTs have a lot of fees.
A: Nope! These are all available over on OpenSea on the Polygon blockchain. What does that mean? No “gas” fees for buying these NFTs. Also means that buying and selling these cards use far less electricity than most Cryptocurrency transactions.
Q: Can I re-sell the cards that I buy?
A: Absolutely! When you buy a card… it’s yours! You can re-sell it for any price you like. If one card becomes more popular than other cards, and the price goes up, you can sell yours for more than you bought it for. Just like traditional baseball trading cards!
Q: How many of each card are made?
A: Only 50 of each card are made. Once those run out… no more of that digital card will be produced. Each card is a limited edition collectable.
Q: Have you thought about making physical cards?
A: I’ve been in contact with print companies to get an idea for what is possible. For the time being, Nerd Cards will only be available as NFTs. The goal is to have some limited print runs done in the future (possibly as exclusives for existing collectors — that is up in the air). But the NFTs are here right now… and here to stay!
Q: Will you feature my favorite computer system, or computer peripheral, on a future card?
A: It seems pretty likely! New cards will be added at regular intervals. If you are a member of The Lunduke Journal community, I take requests.
